City Finances in Good Shape Last Year

Fairhope, Alabama

2012 AUDIT PRESENTED

The city council voted unanimously to accept the annual audit report for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2012.

In response to a question from the mayor, the auditor talked about how much finances had improved sine the 2008 audit, when expenses had almost outstripped revenue and cash reserves had been depleted.

Auditor: "I complement you on the efforts you continue to make to try to further streamline and further manage the assets ... taken great steps in accumulating reserves ... never know when the next hurricane's going to hit ... FEMA takes anywhere from 8, 12, 16 months to reimburse you... having that reserve is valuable ... having that 7 million ... from the position we were several years ago to where we are now... its a positive result .... ."

He said total assets of $161.6 million vs. liabilities (debt) of $47.2 million put the city on "significant, sound financial footing" -- at that time.

Good report, but based on the current spending rates (i.e. buying property you do not need at 500,000 dollars, plus taking it off the tax rolls FOREVER, the Mayor hiring consultants right and left, pay raises to the mayor's pet employees, promotion of employees who were demoted based on improper sexual actions, etc.,etc.) the surplus will not last. Mayor Kant said during the campaign that he would get rid of or reduce the sales tax rate. Remember he vetoed the org. ordinance. Now in a Mobile Press Article he said "when we passed the sales tax". Follow the money if you really care my fellow Fairhope residents. The salary of all employees and any pay raises should be posted on the cities web site. Most do not seem to care as long as the flowers are "pretty".

have to have a sales tax or the tourists and Wal Mart would pay nothing. they'd go back to sneaking up our own utility rates ...
