Wal Mart Annexation Completed

Fairhope, Alabama

MORE REVENUE FOR CITY

Governor Bentley has signed legislation annexing the Wal mart supercenter on Hwy 181 into the city limits. The store will now be required to pay full city sales and property taxes (same as all other businesses in town) -- amounting to about $1.5 million yearly; and the previously un-zoned property will be B-2.

The two out-parcels fronting Hwy 181 where the new American Family Medical Clinic is located (and a proposed gas station will be)  were not annexed; and remain under county jurisdiction and un-zoned.

The city council passed a resolution last February (click) requesting that the state legislature complete the annexation:

"Whereas the city council deems it wise, expedient, and economical to apply for the annexation of said territory to the corporate limits of the City of Fairhope, Alabama by the passage of a Local Law of the state legislature of Alabama."

State Representative Faust and Senator Pittman were sponsors of the legislation.

Would be interesting to see the "city limits" map now. Always was a hodge podge.

Remember the Mayor vetoed the Sales Tax Ordinance. What a great guy he is.....Typical liberal elected official. He loves Obama...

Sales tax is free money from tourists and other out of towners -- rather than just sneaking up our own utility rates like they used to do ...

Municipal annexations were once voluntary. Now coerced by the "conservative" republican legislature.
