Council Member Seeks Better Facilities

Fairhope, Alabama

WATERFRONT PARK

Councilmember Brewer asked fellow council members to consider putting the waterfront park areas under the oversight of the city's Recreation Board, to ensure a more equitable distribution of funds earmarked for recreation.

The Board now primarily oversees larger facilities like ball fields, the stadium and swimming pool, Rec. Center, tennis courts, etc.

Brewer was particularly concerned about upgrading the bunker-like restrooms found there.

Brewer said the Board was "very willing" to take on the added responsibilities.

OTHER PARKS TOO?

Mayor Kant said there were a number of other parks/playgrounds around town the Board could oversee as well, Fels, Jasmine, Young Street, etc.

Kant: "... (it) would be good to have someone coordinate it all ... decide which has priority ... ."

Public Works Dept. would still be responsible for maintenance.

(Publisher's Note: Mayor Kant had said previously he wanted to make improvements to the  equally-dismal restroom on the pier.)

Another example of poor management by the Mayor and Public Works Director Fidler. The Mayor "manages" all departments. It should not matter where you place it. First the park by the K-1 Center, tearing up new trash trucks, a person dying at the public works building, and now poor facilities at the beach. But the flowers look good.

POLITICALLY INSENSITIVE COMMENT ALERT:
It's about time to get serious about enforcing the fee collection at the beach park. Most of the cars parked inside the gate are from Mobile, and there's never anybody collecting fees. How about raising the fee, and put the money toward improvements? It might keep some of the freeloaders out, too.

The mayor and Ms. Fidler have always seen to it the facilities are well maintained: a difficult job considering how filthy some people can be.

They are always clean and neat.

... just old and worn out.

Maybe they can use some of the BP money instead of putting in a flower clock and buying Dyas property to build a botanical garden.

The new 1% sales tax revenue increase from annexing Walmart will generate a substantial amount of new funds for the city. Parks & recreation would be an excellent earmark for this income.

Those restrooms on the water flood out when hrricanes come. Would not want to make them too fancy.

Forget about the flower clock and then we'll talk...

I like the flower clock idea. Draw more tourists and bring more sales tax revenue/

Really?? No one is going to make a special trip to Fairhope to see a flower clock.

It would be like pulling off the highway to see the world's largest ball of string. You pull off for a minute and then head back on your way to more important places.
