CAUTIONS DEPARTMENT HEADS ABOUT SPENDING
During a discussion precipitated by un-anticipated costs for security equipment (cameras, etc.) for the six recently-purchased police cars (Chevy Tahoes) and extra overtime costs -- council President Burrell cautioned all city department heads to diligently stick to their budgets.
Burrell said he wasn't "picking on" the Police Department exclusively "This has to do with city finances in general ... when we're over budget ... where is the money going to come from?"
He said the council should consider carefully any new funding requests this year.
Burrell: "I want to say this to Department Heads. If you are starting to go over your budgets. You might want to bring it to the council and let us know. We have to make the decisions ... to spend the money."
"What are you going to do? ... to cut out ... to pay for this? ... not a pleasant conversation ... but it has to be had ... ."
Chief Petties agreed to delay requests for new radars until next year.
Mayor Kant pointed out that even though the PD is over budget for this year, it is significantly under last year's totals. Two officers went on active military service, contributing to the extra overtime costs.
