Firemen Praised For Fireworks Show

Fairhope, Alabama

The Mayor and Council thanked volunteer fire department personnel for what the mayor called an "excellent" fireworks show on the Fourth of July (click).

Fire Chief Ellis said the group worked from 6:30 that morning until 11PM that night.

Kant said the fireworks cost the city about $13,000 -- but would have been $3-5,000 more if a private company had been hired to shoot them instead.

BETTER EQUIPMENT NEEDED

Council President Burrell said the fire department plans to request funds for  a new "electronic controller" to ignite the rockets.

He called it a safety issue as some of them had to be ignited manually with a flare this time.

NEW FIRE STATION TO FINALLY BE BUILT?

Also, Mayor Kant revealed recently that construction of the new north fire station on donated land on Parker Rd. (behind Publix grocery) is back on the front burner.

The fire department had planned to build one there in 2011, but plans fell through when sufficient funds for construction could not be raised (click). The cost of the building will be about half a million dollars, according to the mayor.

The city purchased a new fire truck for the proposed station that same year-- for about $330,000.

The Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department Inc. is a 501(c)4 non-profit corporation governed by its own Board of Directors -- and heavily supported by city, county, state and federal governments -- as well as by private donations.

They do a great job every year w/fireworks and a big "hats off" for all the other times they are called upon. Even though they are "just" a volunteer group, you couldn't ask for a more dedicated bunch of people. That goes for all the women behind this great group of men too.

The fireworks were great. Also, thanks to the police who apparently arrested 3 to 5 individuals from or near the pier prior to the fireworks show. Not sure that they did but there were escorted from the pier in handcuffs.

Our firemen need to be commended for more then just the fireworks show. Great job all the way around.

Does the McCrory family still serve beer at fire calls?

If they save my house, they can drink all the beer they want. I'll buy.
