A "significant number" of trees -- including pines, magnolias, and some live oaks -- were removed from the tree buffer on state right-of-way along Highway 98 at South Dr. -- to make way for a right turn lane.
The Alabama Department of Transportation is handling the project.
The intersection is notorious for wrecks and traffic backups, especially associated with Eastern Shore Presbyterian Church events. (Church traffic backs up onto the highway.)
Since it is a state-owned right of way, city tree protection laws are not applicable.
