Faulkner Amphitheater Plan Revived

Fairhope, Alabama fairhopetimes@att.net

The long-planned (click) amphitheater for the corner of Morphy Ave. and  School Street is now scheduled for construction next summer.

According to a college new release, "thanks to a $100,000 grant from the IMPACT 100 group (click), Faulkner can continue plans for the new facility ... which will benefit the college ... and the community."

(IMPACT 100 Baldwin county is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of women who seek to enhance the county through arts and culture, education, environment, preservation, etc.)

The Single Tax Corporation and (former) Colony Center for the Performing Arts organization (formed about 10 years ago in an unsuccessful attempt to construct an Arts Center at Fairhope High School) will also be contributing to its $668,000 price tag.

"The amphitheater will mesh nicely with the ambiance of Fairhope, which embraces lifestyles of the arts ... will accommodate 1000 patrons and provide needed space for family friendly events, concerts, movie showings and theater performances ... also be available for community events ie. the Arts and Crafts and Film Festival."

Faulkner President Gary Branch called the project symbolic: "This is another example of the unique 'town and gown' relationship with Fairhope ...  . Support from organizations such as IMPACT 100 and other community sources ... keep our campus growing ... ."

According to informed sources, a shell-type stage sill be on the corner, with seating fanning outward and a brick archway leading to the venue on the north side.

No additional parking will be provided.

Fairhope architect Mac Walcot is designing the project.

The city's Planning Commission will have to approve the plan, when finalized.

Mac should be about ready to retire from what his firm is making off of the city.

Gee maybe your right. As a local I could be a little biased. Maybe, in stead, you should ask one of the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of tourists who visit downtown every year. The proof is in the pudding.
