Flower Clock Gets Hands

Fairhope, Alabama fairhopetimes@att.net

The hands have been installed on the city's new floral clock on N. Section St.

The aluminum hands and electric drive were funded by private donations ($17K) from the Committee on Public Art (COPA); and were manufactured by the Elderhorst Bell Co. of Palm, Pa.

The city has installed a new sidewalk and parking area there as well.

Why not go ahead and extend the sidewalk up 104 to Greeno?

We just want to see the Kant/Fidler Clock. So much for the dirt streets and the city reserves. Bring on the Cat 4 storms...

Nice for the folks up in space. They will actually be able to see what time it is.
This is such a busy intersection…so thankful the city council decided to make it even more of a bottle neck because the people that travel this road have apparently never seen flowers before and must slow down and gawk at this piece of "art".

Just wait until a good wind storm comes, rips those hands off and send them sailing like a weapon.

Biggest waste of money.

I think the City should use those sniper towers Chief Press had built for Arts & Crafts and transform them into viewing towers for the clock. I would be a fitting touch to this disaster...

Such negative comments. It was funded with private donations. Does everything have to be gloom and doom? I think it is beautiful! We are lucky to have such a lovely place to live and it is constantly getting better and better.

Went and looked at it this morn. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. You can't even tell what time it is. I'm not against having something nice there, but what about just a nice big flower bed. Maybe a fountain or some sort of statue. Biggest waste of money. Such a joke.

Only the hands were funded by private donations. We paid for the rest and will continue to pay for the maintenance and upkeep for as long as it is operational. Get with the program!

Should've just bought a bunch of Chia Pets. Those Duck Dynasty ones would really class up the joint.

But when I live in a beautiful place where things are constantly getting better I have nothing to complain about! I hate that!

Nobody asked my opinion before, so I guess now doesn't matter.

It is a beautiful addition to Fairhope. North Section Street has sadly declined in some respects. Unfortunately, there is an eyesore restaurant on the east side of the street midway between the clock and downtown that really needs an update. The owners have big fat pockets and I wonder if they aren't the people responsible for the previous comments. I like the clock and I don't care what time it is.

We just drove past the flower clock and think it is beautiful. What is not to like about it. Some people are never happy and have to complain about the most inconsequential things.

I happen to believe I have the right to speak out when I see my tax money wasted on "the most inconsequential things". Remember, government projects always cost more than is originally projected. Also, I don't believe the yearly cost to maintain this has been addressed.

you get what you voted for my fellow Fairhope residents. The Mayor and his handpicked City Council. Enjoy as the money runs out. Oh well the Kant/Fidler Flower Clock looks awesome. Can you build a Big Ben? That would be super duppppppper...

I guess you are talking about Ben's. It's not fancy but that's part of the charm. It's a dive & you might call it an eyesore but it's always packed. Rather go there & brush crumbs off the seat then go downtown to some fancy place that charges $40 for a burger.

I DIDN'T VOTE FOR THEM! AND IT IS MY MONEY BEING WASTED. KNOW THE HANDS CAME FROM DONATIONS, BUT THE UPKEEP IS MINE TO KEEP. I HAVE ENOUGH UPKEEP W/O THIS RUBBISH. SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE ROADS DOWN BY THE BAY OR SIDEWALKS OR SOMETHING FOR THE CITIZENS HERE - NOT FOR THE TOURIST!!!!!!!!1

YOU CAN'T EVEN READ THE TIME ON THIS ATROCITY. WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT THAT? MORE ACCIDENTS WAITING TO HAPPEN AT AN ALREADY HAZARDOUS INTERSECTION.

Whether its a good idea or not, city employees worked hard on it -- out in all kinds of bad weather. especially J.F. S.S and co.... kudos to them! :)

Yeah, well, talked to a city employee about it just this evening. They think it is the biggest joke/farce. What ever King Kant and Princess Fidler want - it gets done. He even admitted that enough time was not spent on the design - too many flaws, but as he said, when mayor kant wants something done - do it now no matter waht.

Kudos to Fidler and Sligh? Why give kudos to the two people who did nothing but stand around watch (or sit in the truck during bad weather)?

Amen!!!!

thats more of the same-ole lying nonsense from the usual psycho-stalker/hater. every community has one. nothing better to do than sit at the keyboard talking trash all day ...

I like it. It is cool. Iss there any chance to install more around town? Maybe one on the bluff so we can look at it from the pier.

Can we put one down on Young Street. That way they will know how long they have it has been since the city tried to embrace them. The folks in the fruit and nut section, downtown and up in the rich area to the North would not put up with a landfill, public works trash and open burning. Maybe Fidler and Kant could put a junk clock on the roof of the Fidlers office. At least we would have something to look at. Maybe Fidler can build a clock outside the city since she does not live in the city....I love this place!!!!

You are joking aren't you?

No. There could be a series of clocks all over town.
