SCHOOL 'GREEN CLUB'
Fourth, fifth and sixth-graders from 5th grade science teacher Ms. Pritchard's intermediate school Green Club (click) marched in the annual Christmas Parade last Friday night to promote recycling and their upcoming contest to select a design for a mascot for the program: a recycle rascal.
Marchers included: Nancy Anderson; Ms. Pritchard; Chad and Beth Kirtland and their children Hannah, Grace and Sophia; Ava Dowden; Angelina Gover; Savannah McCants; Catie Parkin; Tirza Bryant; Cameron Herzog; Abbie Bullington; Dylan Roberts; Mary Carrick; Avery Dearing; Sarah Smith; Alison Pritchard; and Charlie Tickle.
Their signs read: "Don't be a grinch, go green."
(Earlier this year, the mayor and city council asked the Recycling Committee to investigate ways to improve the city's service -- which has been operating deeply in the red for some time. click)
MASCOT CONTEST DETAILS
Later, at its December meeting, the Recycling Committee announced details of the contest to design the mascot.
Fourth, firth and sixth grade students from area schools (private and home-schooled included) are being asked to create designs and submit them to Intermediate School art teacher Davina Gwin by Feb. 2nd -- who, with the help of students, will then decide the winner (based on criteria provided by the committee chairman, Nancy Anderson).
Students may work individually or in groups and designs sent to Mrs. Gwin, c/o Fairhope Intermediate School, 1101 Fairhope Ave. (or d.gwin (at) bcbe.org).
The committee also discussed rewards for the winner: possibly cash ($30) or a gift card to be provided by a local business. Hopefully the mascot can be selected by early February so it can be combined with the city's anti-litter campaign in time for an Earth Day kickoff for the campaign (April).
OTHER BUSINESS
The committee also:
* Heard a report that the city spent about $19,000 just for tipping fees to the county landfill in
November -- and received $2,500 for paper products collected and sold that month (paper products alone currently account for 85% of the city's yearly total recycling revenue).
* Discussed plans to conduct a survey of residents to find out why they don't recycle (by mail and door to door).
* Discussed the plusses and minuses of various recycling models: single stream, dual stream, separation, etc.
*Discussed possible receptacle types to eventually be placed in city parks.
*Discussed participating in the New Years Eve Ceremony downtown.
