HOUSE DESTROYED

According to various sources James Blevins was injured during a fire in the early morning hours at his home on Nelson Dr. in south west Fairhope.

Blevins, who is handicapped and confined to a wheelchair, could frequently be seen in years past fishing from the pier and gained notoriety when he adopted an injured pelican (click).

The house was fully engulfed when fireman arrived at 3:56 AM this morning according to Chief Ellis' comments to WABF radio.

WABF is also reporting on its Facebook page that, according to unconfirmed reports from friends of the family, Blevins was treated at Thomas, then transported to USA Hospital for observation.

The family lost everything in the fire according to WABF, and they have no insurance.

WKRG TV reports that the fire was caused by a blanket too close to a space heater and that Blevins was rescued by his grandson who was visiting; and sustained burns to his back and neck.

His wife Carmen was not seriously injured but three pets died in the blaze, according to WKRG.

According to WABF radio, an online gofundme.com fundraiser for the family has also been started (click).

Also: "According to family members, A Blevins Family Fire Fund account is now set up at Alabama Credit Union (in parking lot in front of Dollar Tree)."

Updated: The pancake breakfast benefit that had been scheduled for Feb. 1st at the American Legion Post 199 on Mobile St. in Fairhope has been canceled and a fish fry scheduled for Feb 22nd instead.

FISH FRY Fund Raiser for James Blevins 2/22/14
James Blevins has been coming through the Legion's parking lot on his wheelchair every morning and afternoon for many, many years. His motorized wheelchair took him from his home on Nelson Street to Fairhope's Municipal Pier where he was an avid fisherman and participant in the community's news network. He made local and national news several years ago when he nursed a pelican named Henry back to health. Unfortunately James' home was destroyed in a fire this month and he is still in the hospital undergoing burn treatments. Below is the news report of the disaster.
The American Legion in Fairhope will have a Fish Fry Fund Raiser for James Blevins on Saturday, February 22 at the Post starting at 11am. Jack Arnold will be the chief chef for the event. Volunteers and donations of provisions for the fund raiser are requested to contact the Legion at 928-9132 or respond to this e-mail. Thanks for your support to help this friend of the Legion and his family in this time of need. Donations of household items, clothing, etc are also being accepted by Post 199.

I remember James well. On my near-daily walks after I purchased a home in Fairhope in mid-2003, I would see James. He was such a gentleman, even moving off the sidewalk so he could make room for others. One of the "treasures of Fairhope." I so enjoyed our conversations -- and his smiles and energy. All the best to him and his loved ones.
