 PROMOTIONAL MASCOT DESIGN

The deadline for submitting proposals for a mascot ("Recycle Rascal") to be used by the city's Recycle Committee to promote recycling in the city is rapidly approaching.

Students are encouraged to submit their designs by Feb. 2nd, to Intermediate School Art teacher Davina Gwin. (see adjacent notice).

The winning entry will be awarded a prize, sponsored by some local businesses.

RECYCLING COMMITTEE MEETING

At its January meeting, committee members continued discussing plans for promoting recycling at upcoming events, such as Art Walks, Earth Day and the annual Arts and Crafts show in March. Booths and strategically-placed collection bins are planned.

The committee also:

* Discussed the feasibility of recycling/re-purposing the many lost/unclaimed  bicycles accumulating at the Police Department. An auction on Earth Day and establishing bike-sharing program were mentioned.

* Discussed the selling shopping bags to promote recycling

* Heard a brief summary of an audit of recycling practices at city buildings (mostly paper, some aluminum according to Director Fidler).

* Discussed the need for a shredder at city hall so that sensitive utility-billing related paper could be
included.

* Heard an update about forming a sub-committee to study financial models for various possible recycling methods.

* Discussed the need for attractive but functional recycling bins to be placed in city parks.

Their next meeting will be Feb. 12th in the conference room at the Public Works Building. Anyone interested may attend.

It is an uphill battle here in the red states to convince people to recycle. A low priority.
