Who the heck is USA? Will be interesting to see what else goes in there and if they are required to collect the extra tax like wal mart.

The new station is not within the city limits; but the Walmart store was annexed in last Spring.

It is just a matter of time until Home Depot moves in. Highway 181 is already a tacky-looking mess.

Well I guess the city has an ordinance prohibiting big box stores inside the city limits.......except when it doesn't.

When the Walmart was built it was outside of the city and not subject to city restrictions. The city could have delayed, but not stopped, it from coming. Large legal bills for a losing cause would not have been smart. The mayor was able to get concessions on design and landscaping from Walmart. Walmart has proven to be a good corporate neighbor. Look at the sponsorships for local fund raisers and you will see their name often. The mayor and current council were able to convince them to annex into the city and increase the tax base. A good thing for all of us. If people want tighter zoning in unincorporated areas of the county, they need to take it up with the County Commission, not the City of Fairhope.

Went to buy gas at Sam's in Daphne yesterday but my membership had expired. Gas on 181 in that area was $3.59, Sam's was $3.42. Since my membership was expired, I couldn't buy gas. So, I went to the Walmart at Fairhope and is was $3.39. Usually, when I travel from Fairhope to north Alabama (near TN line), the Eastern Shore is the highest gas I see. On a recent trip, Fairhope was the cheapest I saw on that trip. So, I'm thrilled that the Walmart gas station is in Fairhope.
