Movie Filming Causing Traffic Problems

"TAKING OVER DOWNTOWN?"

Mayor Kant told the city council that over the past week, filming of a new made-for-tv movie by crews from California has been causing traffic problems around town and interfering with downtown businesses.

He said filming of the big-screen production 'Somnia' last December caused similar problems.

The mayor said he has gotten a lot of phone calls from merchants that the film crews were "taking over" downtown; and has asked city staff to look into putting together a new ordinance to deal with it in the future.

Kant: "They closed down some streets ... we didn't know about it (in advance)." Cliff Dr. was a particular concern over the past weekend, according to the mayor.

He said a portable food vendor truck was parked in front of a downtown restaurant as well.

Kant: "We want to encourage them ... (they're) booking a lot of rooms in hotels ... but not interfere with other businesses."

The crew was filming around the pier area on Saturday (video below); and was in Page and Palette Friday.

CALLED 'COFFEE SHOP'

The film stars Laura Vandervoot, with John Lovitz and Kevin Sorbo; and is directed by Dave Johnson  of Los Angeles, Ca.

Sorbo is most remembered as Hercules in that mid-1990s television series.

According to a press release:

"The movie tells the story of Donovan Turner, an attractive, intelligent woman in her late 20's who once had it all -- a successful coffee shop in a quaint town, a perfect boyfriend and a host of quirky friends to fill her life with laughter and fun. When it all begins to unravel and she is thrust back into the dating world while her coffee shop sirs on the edge of ruin ... ."

It has also been described as another 'You've Got Mail' set in a coffee shop.

Might be a good time to ask assistance from Eva Golson and/or Diane Hall at the Mobile Film Office to develop a permitting system so interruption is minimized.

There is a lot of drama going on in certain coffee shops around town here too ...

Fairhope is going to have to decide if it wants to be a city or remain a small town. If it is the former, quit your griping. The Fairhope Downtown Merchants complain about everything.

Downtown Merchats have a right to complain. There is NO parking in this town, between Faulkner students taking up all the parking and movie makers, what do you expect?

The unsightly parking garage behind the equally unsightly Hampton Inn seems to be empty most days. Of course, if the library wasn't so large it is visible from space there would be more parking spaces available for Faulkner.

The merchants of this town, in my humble opinion, have little right to complain. They (merchants) are probably taking up most of the parking spots downtown by parking directly in front of their business and causing shoppers to park great distances away. A little self-serving, maybe? In addition, for the most part, the merchants of Fairhope consist primarily of hair salons, dress shops and trinket shops. I suggest in lieu of the aforementioned, more diverse restaurants (e.g. middle eastern, Indian, etc.) to compliment the selection we already have. The town council should lobby for these types of restaurants to fill the void. As far as the movie disturbance - just work with them and show some Southern Hospitality. It can only be a good thing for Fairhope.

Better watch out. Bruce Willis is getting ready to make another movie in the area. Suppose to be centered around a posh resort. Grand Hotel maybe?

Are you suggesting that parking for Faukner students is more beneficial to the city than a public library?
