Big Turnout For Fairhope's Earth Day

Fairhope, Alabama fairhopetimes@att.net

A large crowd turned out today at the Pier Park for the annual Earth Day Mobile event. Some brought  their dogs; but birds, turtles, snakes and other animals also were present.

Officially, Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22nd; but it is often celebrated earlier, on weekends.

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network,[1] and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.[2]

The city's Recycling Committee held a silent auction for unclaimed bicycles from the Police Dept. -- and Public Works Supervisor Dale Linder oversaw the drop-off of electronics and free paper shredding.

Since Fairhope has always been considered a leader in environmental matters, the Committee is working diligently to find ways to increase participation in the program -- to reduce waste going into landfills.
