Heavy Rains Pound City Again

Fairhope, Alabama fairhopetimes@att.net

FISH RIVER FLOODS

Fish River east of town had nearly risen to the bridge at Hwy104 about 9:30 this morning after another record-settting rainstorm hit the area (11.5 inches overnight in Fairhope). Two  weeks ago another storm dumped 7.5 inches on the city.

The river crested at a record 23.2 feet.

The volume of water exceeded the designed capacity of some drainage systems.

City crews were up early removing a tree that had fallen over Section St. north of city hall (part of the road's shoulder had washed away as well) -- and beginning the repair of several sinkholes within city right of ways.

A sink hole also formed on private property in the parking lot of Winn Dixie supermarket.

MORE BLUFF EROSION

S. Beach Park
One of the heaviest-hit areas again appeared to be along the bluff as more red clay eroded down onto the road and beachfront parks below; a reddish plume appeared out into the bay for about 100 yards as well -- as steams and gullies discharged into the bay.

The beach road may have been washed away at one point, exposing underground drainage pipes.

Some of the erosion on the south end appeared to originate from private property above.

Somebody needs to build a dam onFish River to control flooding. Make a nice little lake too.
