Fairhope's Messy Foreign Visitors Return

Fairhope, Alabama

CANADA GEESE CONTROVERSY
Fairhope's Canada Goose problem

Over 130 Canada Geese (Branta canaclens) were observed at beachfront park recently; and about another duck and geese of other species.

Alabama hosts both migrant and year-round Canada geese (slightly larger), according to the Auburn Cooperative Extension:

"In small numbers, the geese present no real problems for land owners; however, large populations can negatively impact water quality in streams and ponds, cause significant damage to agricultural fields, and possibly present a danger to small children, pets, and other avian populations. Large deposits of goose droppings release excessive amounts of nitrogen into the soil. As nitrogen washes into the water supply, algae feeds on it and grows out of control. Large flocks may also compact the soil at a pond’s edge such that grasses and other vegetation can no longer grow. Resident geese feeding on nearby agricultural fields can cause serious losses for farmers."

The geese are regarded as an attraction by some who enjoy feeding them; but a nuisance by others concerned by their droppings and the resulting pollution of ponds and bay waters.

In the Summer of 2012, many animal-loving citizens objected when, in early-morning hours, the city had the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Dept. supervise the removal of a large flock in the park and at the Quail Creek golf course.

Last Spring (click), a similar number returned but migrated elsewhere in early summer (according to the mayor).

Hunting is an option on private property (season starts in Sep.), but not public property.

Reducing the food supply by mowing grass short and posting "do not feed" signs are the only ongoing population-control measures currently being taken  the city.

Curiously, none of the new visitors have the usual numbered neck bands, used by the government for tracking purposes.

(WKRG TV reported today that the geese are now a problem at Mobile's municipal park as well).

Trying to decide if the mayor is licking his lips or wringing his hands. Whatever the case, some birds are going o disappear in the middle of the night and die.

If there are large-property owners willing to take the geese, please call the mayor's office. In 2012 we heard there were 2 such people willing to take them but it was too late.

Large property owner? They're migratory. You could put them in Canada and they'd still return to this spot if that's what they wanted to do. Urban parks like this are perfect for them since natural predators are kept out and people feed them. On a large private land, they'd have to deal with coyotes and forage for themselves...which is why they'd fly back to Fairhope.

What happened in 2012 was a shame. Fairhope is such a joke , they claim to be so animal friendly, that is why they sneak and do things in the dark!!!!!

People eat chicken, turkey, duck, and many other birds. I think I'll Google some goose recipes.

The Fairhope beach area smells like a chicken house. YUCK!

The control administered by USDA wildlife services was done in the middle of the night to avoid non-target species. They fed the geese drugs that dazed them, then carefully corralled them. If they did that mid day, they would not have been able to keep gulls away. Gulls roost at Gaillard Island at night. USDA was professional and surgical. The City Council could have done a better job explaining the process.

Thank you for explaining this in a much better light.

it does not make it right in any way. There is as many seagulls at the bay. The point of the pond is for wildlife. As I recall citizens contacted animal protection agencies and they were upset as well!!!
If Fairhope would sped money on keeping the walkways rinsed off as they spend on flowers it would be a better place. As far as it smelling they do not keep that pump in the pond working in fact I think I have never seen it work . Just blame the geese, what about the rest of the year? what is the excuse. The bathroom above the boat ramp smells of sewage (human) so bad it will take your breath away.

IT was to my knowledge that they were killed!!! don't try to candy coat

Yes, they were gassed. The council was also kept in the dark. Kinda' sickening IMHO

If you like swimming in bird feces Fairhope beach is the place to be. That area needs to be either a bird sanctuary or a beach. Trying to be both is a not good idea for birds or beach goers.

if you swim in the ocean you are swimming in fish and bird waste, if you want to swim without that get a pool and hope your kids are not peeing in it. The bay is natures home. lol

Feeding these geese is all cute and pretty until you realize that you are actually killing them. They are totally legal game to hunters. Including myself and millions of other free Americans. And this country has survived for centuries on feeding ourselves (yes you too)! When you hold that bag of chips or bread.....they become less afraid of us! Therefore upon migrating north they become Thanksgiving dinner! Thanks for your help. Less work for amateurs that kill all they can with ease! Shooing them away is a lot more humane than trying to domesticate a wild animal!

Should impose the same fine for feeding as it is for hunting them out of season. Same death sentence! Now how guilty do you feel about bottle feeding a deer and setting it free on a hunting club? You are doing the same thing! Any dispute to that is uneducated! It's not about the right to hunt. It's about taming legal wild game! Thank you!

???? ramble much?

There is a big difference between compassion for a living thing ( feeding ) than somebody going out and shooting and taking a life of something innocent. I have heard of hunters that bait animals just to kill them. In my opinion those people are lazy cowards.
MY VERY EDUCATED OPINION!!!!
Anonymous said…
Read carefully and understand! You are doing the baiting. Making wild animals dependent on humans is the cause of their demise! What do you eat? Un-innocent animals? Enough said!
Anonymous said…
I am NOT baiting anything....I did read carefully. You stated that feeding is killing animals , no, your gun is killing animals ( wild animals) The animals that are for human consumption are FARM ANIMALS and that is a whole different debate. You are killing animals in the wild that more than likely have babies to feed in which you leave them for humans to step in. "ENOUGH SAID", try something original and more educated lol
Anonymous said…
Do you lay out bags of corn when hunting ,I am guessing that you do..........BAITING!!!
Anonymous said…
There is a difference in feeding something and feeding something to kill it.
Anonymous said…
No. I do not bait. I own 1100 acres of prime farm land here in Baldwin County. I raise the grain and hay that feeds 150 head of cattle on any given day! Just keep eating your Mexican Big Mac's and Chicken McWhatevers!
When you adjust to the real world and get that iphone BS degree attitude right, I'll let walk a day in a farmers shoes. The one that feeds your lazy arse!

This whole thing just reminds me......YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID OR A YANKEE THAT IS STUCK IN A RUT!!!
Anonymous said…
Wow, looks like I hit a nerve , you clearly have issues that I don't care to counsel. (RACIST and PREJUDICE)
I am not a yankee nor am I lazy, but I am sure Yankees help pay your bills if what you say is true. You should get to know your community because there is a lot of Yankees that live in Baldwin County. My grandfathers were both farmers but they were kind people not like you!! If anyone needs to live in the real world it is you!!! CIVIL WAR IS OVER!!!! ha/ha (sent from my iPhone) laughing at your ignorance!!!
Anonymous said…
To also add that the CIVIL WAR ended 150 years ago, way to go being in the real world..... can't stop laughing

Dear Fairhope,
Your beach is made of doo doo.
P.S. I want my 8 bucks back!

if you are shooting the animals that come to feed on the hay and grain it is baiting.

Dove , deer, I have seen guys in the corn fields shooting dove and they look so stupid because how is that real hunting
