Fairhope Seeking A Sister City

Fairhope, Alabama

 CULTURAL EXCHANGE

Rhos-On-Sea Wales
A new committee has been discussing which cities in other countries would be appropriate to partner with under the international Sister Cities program; towns in Wales and Norway are the front runners so far. Sister City Committee members include: Judy Culbreth,; Tod Jonson; Ed Lamonte; DeeDee Litaker; Jeanine Normand; Dennis Sherrin; Linda Speed; Cynthia Wilson; Sherry Sullivan. Jack Burrell represents the city council.

Rhos-on-Sea is a community of 7,100 on the northern coast of  Wales and is usually described as a seaside resort. According to their local legend, a prince, Madoc, discovered America 300 years before Columbus by sailing into Mobile Bay in the year 1170. A plaque was installed at Fort Morgan in 1953 commemorating the event. (Rhos is not an independent entity itself, but part of the greater Colwyn Bay area government).

Another possibility is Alesund, on the western coast of Norway. a major seaport with a population of over 41,000. Alesund is closely associated with the Art Nouveau Architecture movement of the late 19th century. (Oslo was also mentioned as a possibility.)

Since Rhos-On-Sea has already expressed interest in partnering with Fairhope, after a lengthy discussion it was decided as a first step to send them a letter formally seeking pertinent data and information about their city.

(A city may have more than one "sister".)

According to Wikipedia:

Sister Cities International is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between communities in the United States and those in other countries, particularly through the establishment of "sister cities". More than 2,000 cities, states and counties are partnered in 136 countries around the world.[1] The organization "strives to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development"

THIS IS FUNNY . Does Fairhope think that they are a resort town. I have been there it is a joke.

the only thing good about Fairhope is that it is close to the Grand Hotel in Pointe Clear

Glad to know I am not the only one who actually laughed out loud when I read this.

I was going to suggest Cardiff, Wales. They have a beautiful Bay and downtown area.

Wonder if these cities have undercover cops to spy on people renting houses.

Or an ethnically diverse population?

I bet $20.00 bucks that once a sister city is identified and selected, the above listed committee members will get a paid vacation oversees to tour the new sister city! it's all about the free trips on the taxpayer's dime....

They can come see our wonder flower clock, geese at the beach and the sewer outfall line that runs into Mobile Bay...........awesome and way cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure a prerequisite to be the sister city will be a flower clock. Everyone has them don't 'ya know??

I defend the geese because it is a bay and they are migratory birds however I agree with the sewer (man made problems) The bathroom at the boat ramp will take your breath away.

Wow, lots of silly comments by the same person ... The article says the other cites have requested to b Fairhope's partner.

I like the flowerclock. I like the geese. Once the new sewer plant is completed, the outfall pipe will be the cleanest in the country.

why don't you move then? We'll buy you a plane ticket ...

the "people renting houses" for a day or week are criminals breaking zoning laws, running illegal businesses in residential neighborhoods.
Anonymous said…
What's funny about it. Fairhope has always been a resort town,

According to councilman Burrell, the committee's bylaws prohibit the city from financing any travel by its members.

you are the one that needs the plane ticket to actually see a resort town lol
