Fairhope's Coastal Cleanup A Success

INTERNATIONAL CLEANUP DAY

The annual international Coastal Cleanup Day was held this morning, with collection for the Fairhope zone at the pier park; and a Walk to End Alzheimer's fundraiser was held nearby. (video at bottom)

The Ocean Conservancy began the event in the mid-1980s with cleanups at 12 sites along the Texas coast -- and 700 tons of "ocean-bound" trash have been removed from Alabama coastlines and waterways since then.

Public Works Supervisor Dale Linder said he thought about 4 tons had been collected this year, down from last year possibly because of the yearly cleanup efforts and there have been no hurricanes in recent years to "stir things up" and bring sunken debris to the surface.

Volunteer students and teachers bused-in from Central Baldwin Middle School brought back a truckload of junk they collected from the Montrose-area waterfront (picture below).

City Electric Dept. personnel led by Scot Sligh cooked hot dogs for participants -- and Recycling Committee members promoted their renewed recycling efforts.

ALZHEIMER'S WALK SUCCESSFUL TOO

The Eastern Shore Walk To End Alzheimer's fundraising event held nearby raised over $38,000 -- exceeding its $25,000 goal, according to their website.
