CITY'S BIKE COMMITTEE WEIGHS IN
At its last meeting, Fairhope's Pedestrian and Bike Committee expressed support for including a bike path in the plans for the bridge; and hoped the mayor and city council would consider passing a resolution to that effect.
COMMITTEE TO BE REFORMED
Chairman Molly Peterson |
A new mission statement and bylaws for a re-formed committee were discussed, possibly based upon those of the city's Environmental Committee.
Last Spring, the mayor said he wants to expand the committee to assist in building support and seek funding (grants) for more sidewalks, bike paths, and trails in the Fairhope area.
The new committee will report to the city council, not the planning commission as now.
Applications may be obtained from the city clerk's office, for those interested (click).
'WALK-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY' DESIGNATION SOUGHT
It was decided to proceed with the application seeking 'Walk-Friendly' status for the city, possibly beginning with a presentation to the city council sometime in November.
Cities are awarded bronze, silver or gold designations; Fairhope would be the first city in Alabama to qualify.
According to its website (click):
"Walk Friendly Communities is a national recognition program developed to encourage towns and cities across the U.S. to establish or recommit to a high priority for supporting safer walking environments. The WFC program will recognize communities that are working to improve a wide range of conditions related to walking, including safety, mobility, access, and comfort."
