Pier Restrooms Getting Much-needed Overhaul

Fairhope, Alabama

Work has finally begun to renovate the city's public restrooms on the pier: the women's side first.

The men's will be unisex for the time being.

Stalls with doors, new tile, sinks, mirrors and better ventilation are some improvements planned: about $25,000 has been budgeted for the renovation.

The design must consider the fact that the pier is inundated at times, during tropical storms.

Keeping public restrooms clean has always been labor-intensive, because many who use them often "forget to flush."

A city official suggested people may be afraid to touch the flush-handles, because of "the germs."

It is not known if the new toilets will be self-flushing -- although it was suggested.

Those on the pier are cleaned twice a day, in afternoons and about 4 AM each morning.

The mayor said he moved the repairs up in priority, so they will be ready before warmer weather and bigger crowds.

At last word, they are not to be air conditioned, because of the high cost and threat from storms.

Public Works personnel have also been busy repairing the uneven sidewalks at the pier's entrance, a major liability issue.
