Fairhope, Alabama.
TREE CANOPY IN JEOPARDY?
Mayor Kant has asked the city's Tree Committee to develop new ordinances to save the many "significant" large live oak (and other species) trees along city streets; currently only those within the city right of ways are protected.
(Those on private property in the central business district and on other commercial property around town are also covered, with exceptions.)
Significant trees are defined as equal to/over 20" in diameter at breast height, DBH (about 4').
The new ordinance, similar to that in the city of Mobile, would also cover those in the front yards of adjacent private residential property too; the city council will have to vote to enact it.
The Tree Committee, a legislative committee appointed by the council, has been dormant for the past two years, due to a lack of membership and other issues.
It meets four times a year (quarterly), or as needed to advise the city horticulturist on tree matters.
