Fairhope, Alabama. (fairhopetimes@att.net)
FAIRHOPE WATERFRONT
Despite less-than-perfect weather, turnout was good for the annual Mobile Earth Day event at Pier Park today, cosponsored by the city.
City Environmental Officer Dale Lender and committee members were promoting the city's recycling service and offering electronic disposal and paper shredding nearby.
The Recycle committee is finalizing a plan to simplify the city's weekly curbside pick up to increase usage -- and reduce the volume of refuse taken to the county's landfill (costs us $288K per year "tipping fees").
Various other groups were showing films and passing out literature promoting environmental causes as well: Mobile Bay Watch, Weeks Bay Reserve, Coastal Foundation, Sierra Club, etc.
