LADY'S RACE UNDERWAY
Fifty-six planes took off at 8AM this morning from Stafford Regional Airport in Fredericksburg Virgina, continuing and 86-year-old tradition that began with Amelia Earhart, one of the participants in the inaugural 1929 'Women's Air Derby'.
Begun to encourage girls to learn how to fly,
it was also known at one time as the 'Powder Puff Derby' -- and the Air Race Classic since 1977.
The two-pilot female teams ranging in age from 18 - 88 will be handicapped according to their aircraft's capabilities.
The 2,529-statute-mile race will end at Fairhope's Sonny Callahan Regional Airport Thursday afternoon with stops in-between in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, and the Gadsden Alabama airport.
A hangar party is scheduled for Thurday night at the airport and awards banquet at the civic center Saturday.
Te race is being sponsored locally by Continental Motors, the Fairhope airport's FBO (operator).
