TIMOTHY M. LENNICX STATION
The city's fourth fire station located on Parker Rd. at High Ridge Road is almost competed: it was originally scheduled to be open by August, but was delayed when engineering problems emerged according to fire department personnel (wind load).
The station is name for former volunteer fireman and police officer Timothy Lennicx, who passed away at age 40 in 2009 (cancer).
Highridge Road resident Paul Ripp, who vehemently opposed locating the station in his neighborhood became incensed when he saw the first part of the name being installed; he thought it was being named for Fairhope's mayor Timothy M. Kant.
CHANGES COMING TO FLY CREEK PUD?
Sources tell the Times modifications to the plans for the adjacent, mixed-use Fly Creek Village PUD (aka 'Publix' project) are in the works now -- by a Jackson, Ms. architectural firm renown for its "low impact development" projects involving large apartment complexes.
The PUD's original design called for town homes instead, but the market has changed dramatically since that time (2006.)
The new design is to be state-of-the-art to reduce environmental impact on the nearby Fly Creek watershed: the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (NEAP) is assisting with the project, according to the source.
It is to be be a model for 'LID' projects all over the state.
The city council approved a new municipal LID ordinance last month for commercial projects; and for residential subdivisions the month before.
The city's Planning Commission and City Council will have to approve modifying the original Fly Creek Village PUD plan.
