NEW ART CENTER PROJECT

The city council approved a new public art project for this September, proposed by the Eastern Shore Art Center's Committee on Public Art (COPA),  to decorate downtown Fairhope trees using yarn, ribbons, and other soft fabrics that will not harm the trees.

According to Wikipedia,'Yarn Bombing' is a "type of street art that employs colorful displays of yarn or fiber rather than paint or chalk (clk)."

Objects such as statues, bike racks or even bridges are often decorated for similar projects.

Gaye Lindsey, who originated the successful 'Poppies for Veterans' project last November,  came up with this idea as well: the COPA is responsible for numerous permanent art installations around town, including the famous flower clock.

"Yarn bombing" was believed to have started in Houston Texas in 2005 and then quickly spread all over the globe; cities such as New York, Austin, Dallas, and Raleigh have participated.

Fairhope's will be a community project consisting of teams of volunteers each to decorate a particular tree in the downtown area.

Teams may be civic organizations, schools, churches, businesses, etc. --  or just a group of friends -- and may be sponsored by a business, organization, or private citizen.

The installations will be judged and cash awards given to winners in a number of categories, including the "peoples choice."

A Facebook page has been established for those interested in participating in the Art on a Limb fundraiser (click).
