After being out of commission for about a week due to gear-box problems, the city's world famous flower clock is back in operation.

It is not world famous.

It looks like it was copied from Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch…..what a waste of money. It has become such a joke. Fairhope's sewer system is apparently suffering from decades of deferred maintenance because Mayor Kant wanted this vanity project and the never-used amphitheater. Thank heaven he is gone!

Stop hatin' on our f-clock dude.

True Kant was Mayor, but looks like someone might have been pulling the wool over his eyes. May not have known how bad the system really was. That's what (redacted by Publisher) was talking about. More worried how the outside looks instead of what's going on under ground. From my understanding all department heads signed off on all plans, not the Mayor.

So…..were Jack Burrell and Kevin Boone in charge of the 'financial rape of Fairhope'? I can't quite get my head around the facts. I know that Mayor Wilson is here today b/c she is trying to save the city. The only dissenters appear to be Boone & Burrell (who, I understand, had a deal with Kant to become Mayor in 2020). I am not in favor of trying to indict the B's but I do think that they should resign asap.
Does anyone know if Robert Brown is in bed with Burrell? Brown could be a great force for the good of Fairhope on the Council but only if he is not under Jack's thumb!

How does the "superintendent of utilities" not know how bad the sewer system was? That was his other job that he drew a salary for. He had other agendas in putting lipstick on the pig. Flowers are pretty but this city has other priorities that need to be addressed, and not just bow down to those that live in the fruit and "full of" nuts district.

Do you think that Mayor Kant or Wilson actually looks down in a manhole or lift stations. Neither know anything about the utilities other than the basics. Transformer upgrades and water and sewer upgrades come from supervisors and then engineering firms give there opinion on what needs to be done. The sewer plant upgrades took 3 years to get the mayor and other council to even start. Council before spent thousands to decide that the sewer plant needed up grades. Same thing happening now, it will take years to fix the utilities and 30 to 50 million dollars. Then the complaints will start because our utility bill will go up.

Everyone posting on here who thinks Mayor Kant was so bad then why did Fairhope remain financially solvent, and provide more services to the citizens during his tenure than ever before. Without the growth, the library wouldn't be here, the tennis courts would be gone, the money to Fairhope High School would be gone, the police department would less, the flowers would be gone, the lights for the trees would be gone, the list goes on and on!
So, Mayor Kant did a lot of good during his tenure. However, no leader at that level should be in the position for more than 10 years. The Council should place term limits on the mayor's office of two, four-year terms and limit themselves to three, four-year terms.
Having term limits allows for fresh ideas, but we all can see that with only 'local' people running for election, the elected officials wants the city of old. In 1975-1980, this city was a ghost town, most downtown buildings were boarded up just like every other small Alabama town.
What made this city great is the FSTC and the folks not from here, different ideas. IF you look at the blight in the city, it's usually owned by the locals! Also, while Mayor Wilson boasts of her Fairhope roots, she is actually a second generation 'Fairhopian', her grandmother was born and raised in Louisiana but removed to Fairhope. The Brown and Boone families have been around these parts of Alabama for generations. Good families and good people!
Baldwin County is a lot like Walton County, Florida, the county seat is north of I-10, the county could have been broken into South and North. The tourist visits the beaches, and that is where the tax dollar comes from much like Baldwin County. IF anyone in this city thinks folks come to Fairhope for the bay, then they are crazy. We need folks to move here and pay taxes!

The unfortunate fact is that our new mayor doesn't seem to be up to the task. The environment in the city is hostile to say the least.Even the new hire from Riviera left after 4 days at the city and returned back to Riviera. What does this say about current situation. As for the Feb 4th post of women staying home to take of of husbands as their place is as old as our infrastructure.

Boon should be mayor. My kid of guy.

In 2008, the strategic planning committee, comprised of citizen volunteers, looked at the city's infrastructure and wrote a report submitted to the council and mayor of recommendations for the city to implement. This report is on the city website under reports and forms. The issues with the physical infrastructure were noted then; nine years ago. Many of the issues identified with city operations have been addressed and many have not. Those that have not including the antiquated sewer system should be the priority for the city to address, not new soccer fields and sub divisions. The infrastructure is the foundation of the city and must be addressed first.

Boon is supposed to be the Baldwin Insider. The source of a lot of the sleazy gossip going around town.
