Fairhope Government Reform Proposal Takes Next Step

REFERENDUM SET FOR OCTOBER

A petition drive by the Fresh Start Fairhope group of disgruntled citizens to hold a voter referendum to reform what they see as the city's broken government has been successfully certified by the Judge of Probate ... and an election set for October.

"The FRESH START FAIRHOPE initiative has been organized and managed by a group of Fairhope residents who seek to provide, for consideration by the voters of the city of Fairhope, an alternative form of government to move the city of Fairhope forward at a critical time in the development of this fine city."

They WANT people to vote on it for they know that no one votes anymore...as the last two voter turn outs percentage show less than 24% actually give a care to do so.As most(80%) are above the age of 60.

While there are pros and cons about at large councilmen and districts I think it best to at least start off with at large as we have now. For one thing Fairhope is simply not that huge a place. It would be another
issue as to how to draw district lines and then you have the probability that the ones selected are not the best if a district only produces a mediocre candidate. A good council person would be responsive to all the needs of the residents wherever they resided. The entire process is greatly dependent on getting a good person for city manager. Easier said than done. It also may be time to consider having 7 council people and pay them about 3/4 of what the present council makes.
