Airport Authority Members Resign

Fairhope, Alabama

LAST MEETING IN MAY

The Times has learned that Pam Caudill and Ray Hix have resigned from the Airport Authority for personal reasons; remaining Authority members have requested the mayor nominate Amy Pearson and Don Lagarde as their replacements .... and re-nominate current members Vince Boothe and Chip Groner whose terms have expired.

(Mayors nominate Authority members for the city council to confirm/appoint; Mayor Wilson told the Times she is in the process of interviewing the proposed nominees ... and "economic development" is her priority for the airport.)

Their June  meeting scheduled for last week had to be canceled due to lacking a quorum (4 members).

Also, the Authority has entered into negotiations with Kell Jones (Executive Aviation) and Duncan Giles for ground leases for new hangars on the west side of the runway.

Ground leases for construction of new hangars on the east side are about to be awarded as well.

What benefit is this airport to Fairhope and its citizens? Just to carry C-suiters back and forth for golfing?

Remind me again why Fairhope needs an airport?

Economic benefits for not only the city but the entire Eastern Shore area are most often cited.

The last thing Fairhope needs is a busier airport. The really disgusting
story is that the Fairhope airport that is run for the benefit less than 1% of our citizens but literally costs our taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars every year. This is while other infrastructure like water treatment, and fire and police, etc have shortfalls in funding every year. The way our Fairhope airport is being run is a crime against taxpayers.

Airport has been there for about 60 years. Continental motors, the largest manufacturer of general aviation engines in the world, maintenance operation is there providing over 60 jobs. A large portion of the grand hotel business is generated by folks flying in. Several local businesses have their aircraft based there, they are used as a business tool, not a toy.
