 AIREY HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD

Speed bumps were installed on Perdido Avenue at the request of residents there; the city's traffic control committee had approved them earlier in the year.

How can I get some on my street? People fly up and down North Summit like it is a thoroughfare.

"How can I get some on my street?" The article literally tells everyone how it happened - contact the traffic control committee as a first step.

Ask the city clerk for a 'request for speed calming devices' form.

While they are at it, how about doing something at these intersections where people make up their own start of the turn lanes: 181 at 48 turning left (east) on 48; and Fairhope Avenue at Greeno turning left (north) on Greeno. At the Fairhope Avenue one, some start their own turn lane starts close to Ingleside and must not have learned that it doesn't start until the dotted line. Also same thing happens at 181 where people are about to start the turn lane for 48 back closer to Gayfer. It didn't used to be like this with aggressive driving.

Engineering plans have already been developed to improve some of those clogged intersections; but funding has yet to be appropriated to fix them.

Thanks Publisher for the info. However, the problem may be with the traffic, but the rude drivers cannot be fixed by engineers. They need a nice big ticket for swinging into that turn lane way too far in advance. That's a way to crash into someone else trying to obey the law.

I'm no engineer, but if they could put up those plastic barriers that stick out of the road like where the exit ramp from I-10 to 98 in Daphne is it would stop the lawbreakers. I guess with businesses around on these roads that isn't feasible.

Sounds like some complaining on here may be the problem drivers

Speed bumps are antithetical to liberty and the easy answer for overweening bureaucrats. Unless we have a record of an anomalously high accident rate and/or injuries/fatalities, as well as a record of failed enforcement efforts, this is a lazy, immiserating "improvement."

Let's punish unsafe drivers, rather than everyone. Public policy should not be dictated by Mrs. Kravitz.

Well, no, I'm not a problem driver. I wait to get in the turn lane when it's lawful. The lawbreakers make up their own start of the turn lanes. So they would cause a wreck (their fault rear ending) if another driver wanted to get in turn lane while the lawbreakers are speeding up to the light. Of course, that's what rear view mirrors are for, so I do avoid a collusion with the lawbreaker.
The FPD is aware of these problems with lawbreakers. Have been told that there is no good place near that 98 and Fairhope Avenue intersection for the FPD put an officer to catch them in the action.

Guess the rules don't apply to everyone, huh?

Simple solutions: fix the bad intersections and ticket the speeders.

Well if the city and it's engineers would actually allocate proper budgeting the city would be able to address these issue rather than spend the funding on give away land programs(triangle)and waste of other revenue. Some priorities are just more important than others.
