UPDATED: Mayor Vetoes Controversial Ordinance

Fairhope, Alabama

Update 1: Council president Burrell says he is unaware of the mayor's objections; does not know if the council may seek to over-ride the veto.   "I do not know how the Council will vote.  I guess it depends on what changes or edits the Mayor is proposing."

Update 2: The mayor's veto letter was added below.

NEEDS TO BE REEVALUATED?

Mayor Wilson has vetoed an ordinance approved unanimously by the city council during its last meeting regarding sleeping in vehicles and elsewhere "out of doors" in the city's police jurisdiction.

Wilson told the Times she and Police Chief Hollinghead decided some of the wording needed reworking/re-evaluating. Two-thirds of the city council (4) may vote to over-ride the veto at Monday's meeting if they choose to do so.

(We have asked councilman Burrell for comments but have not heard back yet; Mayor Wilson is to provide a fuller explanation shortly.)

It is probably all about the crazy claw lady who has taken over our Welcome Center.

She is good at using people to get whatever she wants!

Got the religious fanatics eating out of her hands. Er, claws I mean.

Missy is so nice and sweet once you get to know her. Why doesn't the Habitat for Humanity build her a nice house here?

Some people just don't want help. Also, does any one even know how many homeless families live in Fairhope? It's not all about the few "strange" people walking around. Some one needs some compassion here.

Do not forget. Jesus was homeless.

Fairhope has serious problems that need the attention of our elected officials. This is not one of them.

Why don't they fix a place for them at their Baptist church or Methodist then?

Frankly I don’t think there is a homeless problem-yet. There are several substantial churches who could band together and deal with this easily except for the mentally ill ones. If any of you have followed the ridiculous homeless situations in some of our big cities ( some of them are down south) you would want to stop it now because it tends to just get worse. I wish some of them would visit “the bookstore.” Councilman Conyers is the only council member working downtown and he wouldn’t put up with it for a minute. Would you patronize a store, bank, restaurant if you had to wade through people who are living like that?

It is our understanding the churches and others have offered/given help many times ... but it has been refused. Especially by one individual who prefers to live on the street.
