2020 Municipal Budget Finally Passed

After weeks of bickering and controversy, the city council passed the new budget for fiscal year 2020: absent were councilmen Burrell (work-related) and Boone (deer hunting in Canada).  Mayor Wilson was absent as well due to a personal issue.

Projected revenue for general government is $30.2 million and $43.1 million for utilities (with a $9.6 million profit which is mostly-used for system upgrades).


Fiscal years begin on October 1st.

Well as for the appropriations for infrastructure ,the money spent on the school purchase could have easily paid for the improvements rather than the up charge on our water sewer bill.This has GOT TO STOP.

I'm sure that the funds allocated to The Haven are part of its operating budget. The Haven is a wonderful part of Fairhope; I wish that the City were able to fund it even more that it does.

The Haven is a privately run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. It is not a municipal shelter operated by the city. Which begs the question why it is receiving funds from the taxpayers. The Fairhope shelter and the Haven share a building. So is the city responsible for the building that houses a non-profit organization? I have been asking about this line item for several years and have yet to receive a logical explanation as to what these funds are used for and who measures the results of the investment. It appears to be a perpetual gift from the city which has added up to a significant amount of money over the years. Who controls it, what city function does it fund and how is the outcome measured would be much more palatable explanation. How do the citizens of Fairhope benefit? I have tried and failed to get an explanation from the city or the council. It may very well fund the ACO for Fairhope which is fine. If it is a simple answer, then answer the question simply. There are a number of animal welfare organizations that provide services for residents of the city - i.e. Baldwin Humane and the Fairhope Cat Coalition. To my knowledge, they do not receive any funding from the city of Fairhope. #wakeup
