Special Meeting Called To Discuss Curfew

Fairhope, Alabama

CLOSED TO PUBLIC DUE TO VIRUS THREAT

The city council has called a special meeting today (April 7) for 4:30 to discuss imposing a curfew.

The meeting will be held by teleconference (among council members) so no members of the public or media will be present, per the governor's March 18th emergency order relaxing regular open meeting laws during the c-virus crisis (below).

(Usually council members must be physically present to establish a quorum/participate in discussions ... and meetings must be open to the public.)

It will not be live streamed or video taped either we were told; a synopsis will be sent out later by the city clerk per the governor's order.

We asked the mayor and council president for possible reasons for imposing a curfew but have not heard back yet.

Why would a curfew help stop the virus? Nobody's out anyway.

It could not hurt so why not?

The Fairhope H.R. is so overtaxed we needed to hire a 3rd party to help with legal matters. Do we not have a city attorney? is the courts not closed? And how did you manage to find the time to discuss a curfew? I believe Baldwin county has 30 plus cases? And why is the press not allowed to be part of the tele-conference. Keep in mind this lockdown will not last forever. And then O my it would be time for an election.

34 cases and one death. For this we need a curfew?
Vote these people out or welcome to the police state of Fairhope.

I have questions not addressed in article. 12 hour curfew, 8, 6 ? Seems to me the only thing you could do during ”curfew hours” would be walking in the dark . Everything should pretty much be closed except take out. (Pharmacy would be OK even with curfew) we are supposed to be on kind of a lockdown anyhow.

Frankly the police should not be busy at all right now and enforcing a curfew would hardly be so tough. I am OK with curfew but it really doesn’t seem to be a big deal given the stay in place orders. I would like to see more social distancing enforcement . People don’t need a citation but a little shaming of violators would be fine. Better done by a cop than me. The CC is going to be pretty busy if they have to have a special meeting every time an issue like this comes up. Bigger fish to fry around here.

"Bigger fish to fry around here."

False. There is no bigger fish to fry than preventing a police state.

If you remain unclear, ask any person who lived under the Stasi. Such persons walk among us still. This is not ancient history. It can repeat itself.
