51 S. CHURCH STREET

The former Church Street Inn bed and breakfast is being converted into a restaurant/bar: at least those were the plans announced by the new owner two years ago when it was rezoned to B-2 for that use. 

Built in 1923 using Clay City tile, it is officially known as the Irwin/Sandoz/Jones house; J.S. Irwin the original owner.

But it's been for sale, with the cottage rented our for short-term travelers. That, plus two-year old plans and a dumpster suggest that a little journalistic inquiry is in order, no?

Yes, we will make inquiries about that. There are many other possible uses under B-2 zoning as well. There is also an obscure section of the zoning code that allows revocation of rezoning .... if any deception by the applicant is ever detected in the process.

Just depends on the fees to abdicate the planning and zoning requirements,as the suggestion of deception is merely circumstantial.Ya know, kinda like some counsels and assemblies.

Good point. Also, I walk past daily and there appears to be no activity other than the near crashes that occur because of the monster dumpster that does not seem to be in use. Can anyone just put a monster dumpster downtown forever? There will be many accidents......these large eyesores that create blindspots should only be permitted for a week at a time.

I agree with the poster as to the dumpster that has been placed there for weeks with no activity. I drive Church Street daily and have been nearly t-boned by vehicles on DeLaMare (they can't help it because there is NO visibility). The City should tow that thing out of there asap.

Maybe, but let's not blindly equate old with worthy. The preservation of history and local character is a laudable aim--but should not be suicide pact.
