Those numbers are interesting, but they tell only the tale that the government wants told. What is the P&L for Fairhope Airport? Are we subsidizing others, and if so, whom? That is what matters to local taxpayers.

So how much revenue did it generate?

If it is such an economic engine please explain the debt.

Government accounting standards omit some common sense information. One thing people overemphasize is cash flow. The airport does have a negative cash flow but the day will come when it is a cash cow. One thing I do is guesstimate how much would someone pay for the airport were it for sale. It is a major asset for the city and I feel the authority is administrating the airport well.

Airports are like golf courses, many operate in the red while a few operate in the black.

I still struggle with the fact that Fairhope has an airport.
It is an asset for those who like to fly private and can't be inconvenienced to catch a ride in Pensacola.
Let's put it up for sale and see what happens.

I previously posted about the airport and government accounting. I would certainly be in favor of at least testing the waters for sale of the airport. The city could easily provide lender financing. I have no idea of the fair value of the airport put it is clearly many millions of dollars.

If the airport is making bank, why are Fairhope taxpayers on the hook for the debt? Who owns the FBO/flight school, etc?

We, Fairhope taxpayers, have to pay the debt on it. If it generates soooo much money then the debt should be, or should have been, paid off. Politicians and executive level folks like to fly into it because its more convenient.

Somebody mentioned the golf course above. Let's put the Quail Creek public golf course up for sale. With the limited play, it has to be operating in the red.

The airport is worth much more than the debt associated with it. The golf course is more marginal and less essential.. We should always consider selling either if the price is reasonable. A golf course around here has a lot unplayable days with the rain. I can’t see a public course
breaking even..
