DISABLED ACCESS LACKING?

After receiving a complaint from a resident of the Southland Place neighborhood (south of Fairhope High School), the federal highway administration wants the city to "voluntarily" bring sidewalks there into compliance with requirements of the ADA, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991.

In a letter received by the city last year, the FHWA determined that "pedestrian facilities under the city's jurisdiction were constructed in a manner that did not meet ADA requirements ... inaccessible sidewalks and missing curb ramps" at locations on Vivian Loop, Davison Loop and Kemper Lane.

During its last meeting, the city council selected Neel-Schaffer Engineering for the engineering/design work; construction is expected to begin May, 2022. Total cost estimates have yet to be determined..

Homes in the neighborhood were built circa 2003/06, by Adams Homes Llc., according to property records.

This has been and is an issue within FAIRHOPE for quite some time, yet the 4.6 million spent on the school could have fixed this way back then, also look at Ecumenical Ministries, no ADA parking with city CO with in the last 5 years, many ares of side walks are extremely high at the edge ,one example is Church south of Magnolia,27 inches at the cure less than 12 from edge, many side was through out town are the same.Even the Single Tx office as quaint as it is has NO ADA compliance for reasonable accommodations AT ALL, no enforcement in any area by PD but that's another subject. Finally the park at the pier is better.

Life's tough, tragically tough for many, but if you think that--and vote as if--our problems are best solved by the free-spending bureaucrats in faraway D.C., our suffering is only just begun.

I'm wheelchair bound, but not bound by the ideology that every square inch of the United States of America must make my life easier, no matter the cost. We, the disabled, pay taxes, too.

I have plenty of choices for housing. I don't need to live in Southland Place.

Let's all get over ourselves.

Its the law. You don't get to make up your own.

Most small towns will shut down if the ADA insists that every corner of its area is wheelchair accessible. If someone wants to shop in a tiny shop in Fairhope, I'm sure that the owners and friends will be happy to accommodate. This is all, in my opinion, set up so that the City needs to spend mega bucks with whomever is the Mayor's preferred contractor. I live downtown and the sidewalks are jacked up everywhere due to tree roots. I have stumbled over the jagged sidewalks and fallen multiple times but I don't blame the City. People are so incredibly pitiful and whiney these days!

Awfully nice knowing Fairhope only has a handful of malcontents.

Who are the malcontents and why?

Ambiguity is not tantamount to cleverness, and neither can it support condescension.
