SPECIAL MEETING TUESDAY
Near the end of a special Airport Authority meeting Tuesday at the Nix Center, authority attorney Josh Myrick questioned a motion to go into a executive session because it may not conform to state law for such meetings, where the public is excluded. (Item #5 on the agenda below.)
Specifically, Myrick observed discussion of "the potential for a new terminal building" did not meet section 36-25A-7(3), Code of Alabama; but "discussion of pending litigation" did.
Accordingly, the board discussed funding for the proposed new terminal/FBO on the east side during the public part of the meeting.
After a lengthy discussion it was decided to "take under further advisement" pursuing a $2.7 million federal hazard mitigation grant; but not pursue a $500K ALDOT Aviation Division grant because of higher-than-expected associated construction estimates. (ALDOT recommended against pursuing it as well.)
The hazard mitigation grant ($700K match from the AA) potentially could combine a new FBO with a safe room to be used by various government agencies during emergencies only. (Similar to the coliseum building in Robertsdale.) Various state and federal agencies were to be contacted for further information.
INSURANCE RENEWAL DISCUSSED TOO
Also during the public meeting the board heard a proposal from Coley Boone of Thames Batre Insurance concerning potential savings by replacement of the authority's expiring insurance policy.
Boone said her company's proposal would save $30K over the current provider's.
A Times reporter was the only citizen present.
