Historic Preservation Committee Has A New Mission

Fairhope, Alabama

Historic Preservation Committee.
New mission.

NEW MEMBERS NEEDED TOO

The city's Historic Preservation Committee met today to discus what steps to take after their new mission statement takes effect in about three weeks.

The city council introduced the ordinance amending their mission during its Jan 24th meeting:

"The historic preservation committee shall engage in a wide range of activities that support preservation of important historical, cultural, and architectural sites and structures in Fairhope. Activities include public outreach and education about preservation, providing information about state and national incentives for preservation and helping interested residents and business owners to secure tax credits and protections accorded to appropriately documented and registered historic properties."

The council should vote for final approval during its next meeting and then the ordinance will take effect after it is advertised per state law.

NEW PLAN PROPOSED

Looking ahead, members suggested:

1. Make sure historic preservation is a component in the city's current comprehensive growth plan update.

2. Establish a website to help promote preservation.

3. Invite preservation experts to committee meeting twice a year to provide guidance to the public.

4. History "contests" for school students.

Gary Gover, Skip Jones, and Mara Hunter were committee members present. There are two vacancies.

I would like to see the Historic Committee give a scroll or some award for those that have rebuilt older homes stores throughout the Fairhope area. Then have it printed in the Courier.
