New Mobile Street Reflectors Too Noisy?

PEDESTRIAN/BIKE LANE PROTECTION DEVICE

A South Mobile Street resident told the city's Street/Traffic Control Committee the new reflectors installed on his street south of Fels Ave. about a month ago were causing "noise pollution" that was disturbing the neighborhood especially in early morning hours; and wondered if an alternative method could be found.

Resident: "... bump, bump, bump ... all day long  ... especially trailers ... early mornings ... ." (see video below)

Public Works director Johnson said his department was directed to install the RPMs (raised pavement markers) in question as a safety enhancement measure, to provide some protection for the adjacent Eastern Shore Trail where the trail/sidewalk is especially narrow. (Noise/vibration warn motorists if they drift out of their lane.)

Councilman Burrell: "Removing them may be dangerous for pedestrians ... want something to get drivers' attention."

The citizen suggested trying another type of reflector instead, with "no sound issues."

Councilman Burrell asked Johnson to look into alternatives; and perhaps consult with the Bike/Pedestrian Committee about it too.

(The reflectors are installed along Mobile Street from Fairhope Avenue southward to Pier Avenue, but additional ones have been authorized south of the American Legion building as well. Stretches of sidewalk (E.S. Trail) there are too narrow for both bike and pedestrian traffic.)

What a spoiled and entitled community of whiners we live in. There are so many real problems in Fairhope. The fact that our council and a city employee even entertained this issue demonstrates a true lack of leadership in Fairhope.

The problem there is the sidewalk is too narrow.

But they worked! In the video, one of the people walking turned their head around.

Have the police write the car a ticket for swerving off the road. Reckless driving and probably speeding.
