County Planning for Explosive Growth Too

Fairhope, Alabama

Matthew Brown opened meeting.

Consultant's presentation.

NEW COUNTY MASTER PLAN

The Baldwin County Planning Department held a community meeting  at the Fairhope satellite courthouse last week to gather more input from citizens for a new comprehensive growth plan for the county. (see baldwinourvision.com)

Baldwin County Planning Director Matthew Brown called the process "a look into the future growth and how to manage it ... the best ways possible ... ."

This process is entirely different for the city-led effort currently underway; but coordinating such efforts was one of the important priorities mentioned. Fairhope planning director Hunter Simmons attended the meeting as well.

Problems areas already identified by consultants from 'Design Workshop' of Raleigh NC. are:

* "Altered" quality of life.

* Sprawl.

* Environmental issues.

* Tensions with local municipalities and ...

* No unified approach. Need for coordination.

Based upon data gathered from citizens and stakeholders the consultants will formulate a plan to present for adoption to the county commission, who will then be tasked with implementation.

The identified concerns are no surprise. Unfortunately, it may be too late to avoid the mess being created. Also consider to be puzzled as to why the consultants are out of this area. Seems like a company with the needed expertise and knowledge of the county would be better.
