Fairhope Pier/Waterfront Plan Moves Ahead Too

The city council also authorized moving ahead with the long-delayed working waterfront plan, to be funded by a $6 million federal grant.

The council selected an open-car design for the stair lift, Kingstone for the seawall, and decided to go with the no-arch design for the pier's entrance. (The lift is to be located adjacent the southern-most staircase.)

More parking spaces and restrooms are to be added as well and the fountain rebuilt; but the design of the rose garden remains essentially the same.

Whether some sort of wire railing will be installed along the seawall (a safety requirement) will be decided at a later date (a hold harmless agreement could be arranged instead, according to the project engineer).

GMC Engineering will finalize the plan which will then have to be approved by the federal government; the project could be let our for bids in about a year, according to the mayor.

(Also, we understand negotiations have begun for a new tenant to operate the restaurant on the pier itself.)
