Gayfer Turn Lanes Delayed By Advertising Snafu

Fairhope, Alabama

Gayfer Road/US 98 turning lanes delayed.

FEDERAL ADVERTISING REQUIREMENTS NOT MET?

Because federal advertising requirements apparently were not met due to higher than expected construction costs,  a  contract for much-needed turning lanes from Gayfer Road onto Greeno Road has been delayed to allow time for the project to be re-advertised in three seperate state wide newspapers, per federal regulations.

After consulting with city Treasurer Kimberly Creech, public works director Richard Johnson recommended that "to be safe" the city council reject the only bid received, for $524K, because is was over the threshold for local advertising only. This project had been advertised in local Gulf Coast Media publications only.

Johnson said he hoped the delay would be only for about a month, so the contract could be awarded and actual construction completed during this summer's school break.

This is a joint project funded by the federal Eastern Shore MPO (80%) and city of Fairhope (20%).

The Times has learned at least one other ESMPO/city partnership project may have to be rebid as well, for the same reason.
