SOUTH GREENO ROAD

Multiple sources at city hall tell the Times that Pennsylvania-based 'Wawa' convenience stores is planning to locate on the southeast corner of the Greeno/Twin Beech Road intersection, near Fairhope High School. The company already operates 950 stores on the east coast and in Florida;  "Wawa" is a Native American word for Canada goose ... and the name of the company's town/headquarters in Penn.

Excavations on the proposed site earlier in the year were for required preliminary soil testing/environmental permits. The site is in the Cowpen Creek/Fish River watershed.

Company info: "Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 ... Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, Pa, in 1902 ... . Today, Wawa is your all day, every day stop for fresh, built-to-order foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services, .... A chain of more than 950 convenience retail stores  Wawa ... located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, and Washington, D.C. ... .

Our Logo: "Wawa" is a Native American word for the Canada Goose that was found in the Delaware Valley over 100 years ago. Our original Dairy farm was built on land located in a rural section of Pennsylvania called Wawa. That's why we use the goose on Wawa's corporate logo."

GULF COAST EXPANSION PLANNED

From a previous press report about Gulf Coast expansion:

“Over the years, we’ve been delighted to hear from so many people from so many areas, who are interested in having a Wawa closer to home,” said John Poplawski, Vice President of Real Estate for Wawa, in a media release.

There is no word yet exactly how close the Gulf Coast is to seeing a Wawa open, but the media release says the first stores in its Panhandle expansion should open in 2024.

The stores offer a large fresh food service selection, including Wawa’s fan-favorite custom prepared hoagies, coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, specialty beverages and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks ... ."

Bring on more road combustion near the high school

I would prefer less road burning near the school, and everywhere, so that we can safely operate our vehicles (with their internal congestion engines). We should also hire a consultant to study the relationship between ignorance and carping about life in Fairhope. Positive correlation? Causation?

I grew up with Wawa and it is amazing! Our
Mayor comparing it to Bucee’s is like comparing Whole Foods to Wal-Mart!
Wawa has plans to bring their own water & sewer system with them. Mainly they are ready to listen customers feedback to improve their performance.
