CORPORATE LAWYERS' HANDS

Finalization of the donation of 12 acres of land behind its Fairhope store to the city by the Walmart Corporation of Bentonville, Arkansas that was accepted by the city council almost a year ago is still in the hands of the corporation's lawyers in Arkansas, according to mayor Sullivan.

When asked about it by the Times, Sullivan said she cannot include money in next year's budget for the much-needed new police substation until the land deal is completed. Frequent personnel changes in the company's legal department was mentioned as the main hold-up by the mayor.

The company's only condition for the donation was that a police precinct be built there ... and the rest of the property used for other municipal purposes only such as a park, fire station, playground, school, library, etc.  (A jail was specifically excluded however.)

Hand Arendall is handling the legal transaction for the city.

The Times has reached out to Walmart for comment, but not heard back yet.

Will the new east side police station help lack of traffic enforcement ?

There are no traffic police officers anymore in any town or city in Baldwin County. However, they do have special task forces set up to try and catch drug dealers by profiling certain vehicles in order to confiscate assets.
