CIVIL WAR IN BALDWIN COUNTY

Mike Bunn, author and director of Blakeley State Park north of Spanish Fort kicked off a new series of monthly lectures to be held Saturdays at the Fairhope Museum of History by discussing the new USCT Heritage Trial at the park to open in the fall.

Bunn said he and his staff are preparing the site now where almost four thousand "colored" troops participated in the battle of Blakeley in the spring of 1865, part of the federal Army of West Mississippi consisting of of over sixteen thousand troops in one of the last battles of the war.

The African Americans held down the northern side of the battlefield and participated in a final charge on Sunday, April 9th that ended the eight-day siege. The 2,000 acre site is currently not a part of the park but owned by the park foundation, he said.

Trenches and other fortifications constructed by both sides are still visible there.

The new exhibit is scheduled to open to the public on November 12th, he said.

Bunn is the author of several history books including the Fourteenth Colony and Battle for the Southern Frontier.
