Solutions Sought For Delivery Truck Problem Downtown

BLOCKING STREET TRAFFIC ?

During a recent meeting, the city's Street and Traffic Control Committee began discussing ways to deal with the chronic problem of delivery trucks periodically blocking streets in the downtown central business district.

The problem has become especially bad on N. Section Street where new businesses have sprung up in recent years, but is a problem "all over town" too according to police chief Hollinghead.

Dr. Doug Harrell, whose dental office is at 71 N Section Street, said his patients often are blocked from entering/exiting his drive way by the trucks and even crosswalks in the area are being blocked at times; he worried "someone's going to get injured."

Possible solutions discussed include more designated loading zones, setting time limits for deliveries, moving deliveries to side streets (Bancroft? Bellangee?), and using the civic center parking lot for deliveries in the S. Section Street area.

Planning director Simmons mentioned that more one way streets may be beneficial too, according to planning consultants the city has hired.

The committee decided to table the matter for a future meeting.

I need to weigh in on this one. Parking downtown is an absolute mess. Profits are trumping logic.
If the parking structure in under-utilized, folks need to be made to use it.

Reduce the number of parking spaces for ambulatory on downtown streets. Create a sufficient number of retired spaces for loading zones in front of businesses. Create more handicapped spaces for any additional retired ambulatory remaining.

Only other option is parking meters, which could pay for additional parking structures. Make folks park in periphery areas if they don’t want to pay.

Is there a better idea?

The extended cab pickups and giant SUV's parked on Section acutally block the traffic lanes, you have to cross into on comming traffic to get around them. Where are the entrances to the parking garage, just because you know where they are does not mean that people new to Fairhope or visitors know they exist.

Simple set forth specific times of delivery 7 pm to 7 am.STOP misappropriating funds,as in ADA compliance.Such suit /complaint had to be filed to redo sidewalks yet replace, add required parking spots,in ADA requirements, to include Emmie,s and other businesses receiving CO from city.Change to parallel parking and introduce more one way streets.Add parking meters now that the Single Tax Corp removed advolareum tax(with out vote)and the city is a taxed corporate municipality (without vote).

Last time I looked, all the parking on Section Street is parallel. How can these extended cab trucks and giant SUV's stick out in the street?

There are parking slots in front of The French Quarter but they are not long enough to prevent large vehicles from protruding into the traffic lanes. Same issue exists on Fairhope Avenue but I don't see a solution. I agree that the delivery trucks cause major blockages but at least they force traffic to slow down driving through downtown. There are always (other than major events like Mardi Gras) an abundance of vacant parking spaces on Summit and on Bancroft. While one cannot always park right in front of a particular business, walking a few blocks at most wouldn't hurt many people.
