New Silverhill School Construction Started

New Silverhill school site.

 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Details are still sketchy but site preparation has begun for the new Silverhill Elementary School on a 75 acre site at 20152 CR 55 south of the town (CR 48 intersection).

Adams Stewart Llc. of Robertsdale is the architect -- and Triptek Construction of Atmore was low bidder at $5.3 million, approved at the September 15th Board of Education meeting.

The 75 acre site was purchased about a year ago for $946K; no indication yet of what else could be eventually built on the large parcel though.

In an earlier interview, school system Superintendent Eddie Tyler said the new school could accommodate up to 1,000 students. 

The land previously belonged to the Alvin and Phyllis Escue family according to land records.

There has been no official announcement yet about this from the Baldwin Board of Education, other than the purchase of the land a year ago, as far as we know. No plan/building design released to the public. Just a sign erected by the state on the parcel last week. Suspect they may be planning a ground-breaking photo-op some day ... .

Terrible place for a school. It will be a traffic nightmare. County road 55 is (now was) one of the only good roads going north and south in the County.

I have no problem with the school being built in that location. The real problem is all the heavy industrial traffic on 55. It has increased exponentially over the last 20 years due to drivers trying to avoid the nightmarish traffic of 59. 55's traffic is bad now. The addition of the school will make it worse. The industrial traffic should be limited to 4 lane north south roads, to the nearest connecting road to their destination.
