TABLED FOR MORE STUDY
The city council voted not to immediately remove the speed bump on Ingleside Drive between Fairhope Avenue and Morphy -- as was recommended by the city's traffic/street committee.
Councilman Burrell, who voted to remove it as a member of that committee, said he had since heard from other neighborhood residents who want to keep it there -- to slow down traffic.

I live within feet of the debated speedbump on Ingleside between Morphy and Fairhope Ave., and was one of the original signers of the petition to have a traffic calming device installed. I am also one of the signers requesting that it now be removed.
The request that it be removed has two reasons: 1.) it isn’t working. Mayor Sullivan’s study shows the average speed after the bump installation is 36 miles an hour. That’s average, because many cars and pickups don’t slow when going over it. The second reason is this: 2.) the noise generated when cars and trucks pulling flatbed trailers crash over it is unbearable to those who live nearby. The vibration can be felt within our homes.
These two reasons were detailed in a letter to Mayor Sullivan, individual members of the Fairhope City Council including Mr. Burrell, and to Police Chief Hollinghead in preparation for their Traffic Committee meeting held 6/26/23.
If given the choice of speeding traffic or unbearable noise from a speedbump that isn’t working, we chose to request to have the speedbump removed.
Included in the letter was also a request for the City of Fairhope to honor the original request to install another type of Traffic Calming Device that would do the job. The existing speedbump can be removed and the noise problem eliminated while the City of Fairhope works on a more effective speeding solution.
