New "Cajun" Restaurant Coming to S. Mobile Street

Fairhope, Alabama

805 S. Mobile Street

Renovations have started for a new Louisiana Cajun-themed restaurant at the old 'Wintzells' location at 805 S. Mobile Street, according to the new owner Tyler Hood in 2021 who operates similar ones in the Baton Rouge area (called 'Chimes').

No restaurant name had been selected yet, the owner said in 2021.

With two restaurants operating in Baton Rouge and one each in Covington and Lafayette, The Chimes has a 25 year history of serving customers, according to owner Tyler Hood. But before Fairhope’s location can open, Hood has plenty of work to do. While sitting empty, the building--which already needed work when operating as Wintzell’s--deteriorated further. Hood shared two pictures showing the interior, which has been gutted; flooring, ceilings and walls are gone and most of the structure has been stripped to the studs.

Bringing The Chimes to Fairhope got a big boost when Hood received clearance to proceed with rebuilding. “We just recently started renovations after getting permits back from the City,” Hood said in an email. “Our plan is to extensively renovate the building and open a Louisiana Seafood restaurant in the space. Unfortunately, it is too early in the process to even have a guess as to a completion date. It is a good deal of work. It's an extensive renovation for sure, but renovation was going to be better for the trees versus a new build.”
