Council Purchases Last Bluff Private Property

Fairhope, Alabama

Purchased by city.

'0' FAIRHOPE AVENUE

The city council voted unanimously tonight to purchase the controversial .09 acre below-bluff property at '0' Fairhope Avenue from the Single Tax Corporation for $237,500 -- subject to the same deed restrictions as the other surrounding "parklands."

The FSTC board of directors approved the sale last week.

In 2018, a former owner proposed building a 3-story condominium building on the property but could not get the required zoning variances. Two current council members, Burrell and Martin, have expressed interest in locating a "fitness court" there -- but the three others have not officially weighed in yet. (Mayor Sullivan, who has no vote, told the Times earlier she thought that Stimpson Field may be a better location for the fitness court.)

All of the property in the area was once owned by the private FSTC; most was donated to the city in the 1930s.

Hope they tear don the eyesore there now.

Please don't put a fitness court there. Stimpson Field is a much better location.

The property north of the duckless duck pond is still private property

Stimpson Field is a better choice as it is already a first class multi-sports complex (with the exception of the walking track, which is in deplorable condition).

Leave it natural. People need nature. Butterfly plants would be nice.

Actually, McDonald's has decided not to rebuild the Greeno location in favor of a new concept at this location by the water, identical to the one in Malibu, California. It's called "MiniMAC," and serves a limited menu of traditional items but adds more ice creams, Coney Island hotdogs, and even alcoholic tropical drinks.
The building aesthetic is totally different, too--designed to capture the surf shack vibe. Pretty cool.

Mr. Burrell and Mr. Martin are correct that the fitness court should be down by the bay. That is the logical place because more people use the walking/fitness trails along the bay and downtown than they do at Stimpson Field. Stimpson Field is only used for pickle ball and tennis and no-one will use it out there. Will be a waste of taxpayer dollars. Put the fitness court in a central location down by the bay and not a neighborhood.
