More Speed Calming Approved For Summer Lake Street

Fairhope, Alabama

More Summer Lake Speed Control

SCHOOL TRAFFIC PROBLEM AREA

The city council approved the installation of another speed table on Summer Lake Street, the fourth on that street notorious for school-rush cut-through traffic. The city's Street/Traffic Control committee had approved it at their last meeting as well.

Materials will be provided by the neighborhood HOA (cost about $7500) and installed by city personnel; the less attractive, smaller rubber bumps are usually installed at no charge by the city.

Councilman Martin lives in the neighborhood.

Existing speed table.

It’s high time the City look at speeding in neighborhoods and implement traffic calming measures or enforcement. It’s only going to get worse.

To all who want speed calming devices installed on their neighborhood streets, good luck working through the city’s forms and bureaucracy. We’ve tried for 3 years with nothing but useless talk from the decision makers. It’s really unbelievable how much they oppose making our streets safer.

Fairhope rarely gives speeding tickets. The current and past mayors believe that tourist will be discouraged if the city has the reputation of a speed trap. Those of us that have been here long enough still talk about Daphne.

The culprit is us, the residents of Fairhope and those that live in the surrounding areas. It is the business owners, the city employees, the old and young. We all speed in our neighborhood and your neighborhood. We are the reason we don’t see kids on bikes in the neighborhoods or downtown. We know we drive like everyone else and it is dangerous for anyone else on the streets. So we are horrified if we let our kids ride on the streets.
